Takeaways from McKnight’s Fall Online Expo: Payment

Patrica J. Boyer, MSM, RN, NHA, and Health Care Director of Clinical Services for Wipfli LLP, gave a presentation on skilled nursing facility (SNF) reimbursement this this afternoon. While much of the content about the IMPACT Act and CMS proposed rules was already discussed during S4 Group’s talk with Venson Wallin of BDO (available for download here), Boyer made a few additional points worth mentioning.

She emphasized that with the increasing shift toward transparency, especially in terms of quality, more information about individual SNFs will be required to be available to the public through sites like Nursing Home Compare. Your all-condition risk-adjusted potentially preventable hospital readmission rate, for example, will be published on Nursing Home Compare within two years.

Boyer noted that only one quarter’s worth of data from 2016 will be used to determine your 2018 payments, so pay special attention to October 1st – December 31st of 2016. It will not be until 2020 that a whole previous fiscal year’s data will be used.

Here are Boyer’s suggestions of what you can do proactively to succeed:
• Know your hospital readmission rates
• Evaluate causes of readmissions and needed improvements
• Evaluate staffing categories
• Monitor resident acuity levels
• Monitor Quality Measures
• Implement Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) processes
